BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz security chief Keneshbek Duishebaev says 11 guns -- including an AK-47 -- were confiscated at the parliament after a scuffle between deputies last week, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Duishebaev, chairman of the state Committee for National Security (UKMK), said today that 10 pistols and one AK-47 assault rife were found after two deputies exchanged punches following a fiery parliament session on April 1.
Duishebaev said several large young men appeared in the parliament's corridors after the leader of the Ata-Jurt (Homeland) party, Kamchybek Tashiev, and a deputy from Deputy Prime Minister Omurbek Babanov's Respublika party, Altynbek Sulaimanov, fought in the parliament building on April 1.
UKMK officers began checking everyone entering and leaving parliament after the scuffle and found the guns, some of which belonged to Ar-Namys (Dignity) party leader Feliks Kulov. Some reports say a number of the guns were found in cars belonging to parliament members.
Tashiev and Sulaimanov scuffled after Tashiev said his party would quit the coalition government if corruption accusations against Deputy Prime Minister Omurbek Babanov were proven to be true.
On April 1, former Prosecutor-General Kubatbek Baibolov, who was sacked one day earlier, accused President Roza Otunbaeva and her associates of being corrupt. He added that he had information proving the involvement of Babanov in illegal financial activities.
